Answers to research questions [Part 5]

This blog entry will answer Q3, 7, 10, 14, 15, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 28 of our 30 questions.

Q3: How many animals are killed for human consumption each year?

Q7: Is fur necessary?

Q10: Are Factory farming cruel?

Q14: What is whaling and why does it matter?

Q15: Are we eating meat too much?

Q21: Which country eats meat the most?

Q22: Can humans live without meat and milk?

Q23: Is the number of animals in the world decreasing?

Q24: Do animals have rights>

Q28: Some places eat dog meat. Should this be banned?

[Animal Consumption]

Unless you're vegan, vegetarian, or belong to a religious group that does not eat animals or you simply don't like an animal, we've all at least eaten animals. Each year, an estimated 50 billion chickens are slaughtered for food every year. And nearly 1.5 billion pigs are killed to feed for pork, bacon, ham, and sausages.

We eat more meat per person than ever in the last 50 years. And China is one of the world's biggest consumers of meat. In addition, China, South Korea, and Vietnam eat dogs and cats. An estimated 30 million dogs across Asia are killed for human consumption. Eating dogs and cats should be banned because of cruelty cases. In Taiwan, they banned selling and eating cats and dogs because the new Animal Protection Act states that people who eat or buy will face fines of up to 6,500 pound sterling which is about 7851.55 US dollars. And those who torture animals will receive a fine of 52,000 pound sterling ($62835.24) and two years in prison.

To protect the animals which should have rights, they deserve to live their lives free from suffering and exploitation, should we stop eating animals such as meat and milk? Yes, we can live without them in our diet. However, we must seek out the essential nutrients that milk and other dairy foods provide, from other dietary sources. For example, there is soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk, cashew milk, etc. For meat substitutes, you can have tofu, tempeh, quinoa, and more.

You might think that due to the increase in meat consumption, animals in the world are decreasing. It is indeed decreasing however, it is mammals, fish, birds, reptiles, and amphibians that are decreasing.

[Fur]

The necessity of fur is very complicated because there are pros and cons. Supporters of animal rights like PETA are against fur because millions of animals are hanged, bled to death, and often skinned alive for their fur. From the fashion brand's side, fur is the fashion equivalent of farm-to-table beef; it's more ethical and safer for our ecosystem than a polyester or acrylic faux alternative.

[Whaling]

Whaling is the hunting of whales for food and oil. Since the mid-20th century, whale populations began to drop which is a problem. Whales are at the top of the food chain and play a huge role in the health of the marine environment. They capture carbon from the atmosphere which helps to slowly stop climate change.

[Factory Farming]

Factory farms are industrial animal factories that breed and raise animals for human consumption. The article discusses the cruelty and suffering that the animals face. On top of that not only are they harming animals, but factory farming also harms the environment and people at a fast rate.

  1. These questions were well researched and your sources were cited appropriately. I hadn't realized that whales (as long as they're allowed to die a natural death and sink to the ocean floor) are great at sequestrating carbon. Your blog post led me to do some of my own research and I found that "20th Century whaling added about 70 million tonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere" because whales that would have been "buried at sea," so to speak, were brought out of the water and that huge about of carbon they had been storing their whole life entered the atmosphere. They also play a role in "fertilizing" the ocean through the huge amount of waste they produce. The important role they have in marine eco-systems is only recently being understood.
